Scutto Takes Silver as Boukli and Giliazova shine for Europe on opening day in Baku

Europe collected three of the four medals available in the women’s -48kg category on the opening day (4 October) of the 2026 World Judo Championships in Baku, with Assunta Scutto (ITA, silver), Shirine Boukli (FRA, bronze) and Sabina Giliazova (RUS, bronze) all reaching the podium. Only Japan’s Wakana Koga stood between Europe and a clean sweep of the medals, defeating defending world champion Scutto in the final to claim her first senior world title. For Scutto, silver marked her fifth consecutive senior world championship medal, and a rewarding one at that after a difficult year since becoming world champion in 2025. The Italian arrived in Baku showing signs that she had rediscovered her best form following injury, surgery and a challenging run of results. Her victory at the Lima Grand Prix earlier this year was her first World Judo Tour gold since winning the world title, and she carried that momentum into the final in the Azerbaijani capital. Her path to that final, however, was anything but straightforward. Scutto began her -48kg draw by eliminating world number one and top seed Hui of China, before continuing all the way to another world final.
