Liparteliani Shines Again on the World Stage with -57kg Silver in Baku

One year after making history in Budapest, Georgia’s Eteri Liparteliani found her way into her second consecutive world final. This time, however, she stepped on the tatami as the defending champion in Baku, Azerbaijan. And for much of the day (6 October), the 27-year-old had looked almost untouchable, producing exactly the sort of judo that had carried her to the title a year earlier. Powerful, athletic and positive, she tore through the draw on her way, throwing all but one opponent (Germany’s Seija Ballhaus) to ippon on her way to a second ever world final. If anyone was going to take the title away from her, they were going to have to earn it. Enter: Japan’s Omori Akari. In what can only be described as a meeting of opposite styles, Omori immediately showed that she had no intention of allowing the Georgian to dictate the gripping exchanges. Liparteliani continued to attack and move forward, throwing different shapes and entries at the Japanese judoka, but Omori remained disciplined. The penalties began to accumulate, with Liparteliani receiving one shido and Omori two. Neither could produce a score in regulation time, however, and the world title moved into golden score.
